I was lucky enough to tag along with my father on his annual hunt with Clay Pope in October of 2010. My father has been hunting with Clay for at least 8 years. We were going on an archery hunt for whitetail at his ranch in southwest Texas. Clay is a true professional outfitter. His accomodations were fantastic and the home cooking by his wife Holly made you feel at home. When it comes to guiding and management of his property, no one works harder than Clay. He prepared various blinds and tree stand opportunities for me to get great shots at Pope and Young class bucks. Clay worked his tail off for me. I was in great set ups for three days but the bucks we were expecting did not come into range or the light in the evening just was too dark. That’s hunting! I never lost confidence though. Being the professional that Clay is he took me to his home and showed me all his game camera photos of great bucks and locations we could try! To say the least, I had major deer action during every hunt. On my fourth and final morning hunt, Clay put me in a great tree stand tucked into a live oak. And like clockwork, as Clay told me, 3 Pope and Young bucks came out at 25 yards. They walked down a fence line and came right to the corn he had spread an hour earlier. There were 2 very nice shooter-8-points and the biggest of the three which was a handsome 9-point. I took the 9-point which scored a little over 140 Pope and Young. This was my first buck and it was a dandy! I couldn’t have been more happy with how everything took place, and I cannot wait to go back!
Best,
